Board of Nursing Members
The Governor appoints 7 RNs, 2 LPNs, and 2 public members according to the qualifications listed in SDCL 36-9. Members must be citizens of the United States and residents of South Dakota for two years before beginning a term of office.
RN Member Qualifications
- Licensed in good standing as RNs in South Dakota;
- Have at least five years’ experience since graduation in the practice of nursing;
- Actively engaged in nursing for at least three of the last four years preceding appointment;
- At least two members must be from nursing service or practice;
- At least two members must be from nursing education, one who is a faculty member or administrator of a practical nursing program and one who is a faculty member or an administrator of a RN program; and
- At least one member who is licensed as an advanced practice registered nurse.
LPN Member Qualifications
- Licensed in good standing as a LPNs in South Dakota;
- Have at least five years’ experience since graduation as an LPN; and
- Have been actively engaged in practical nursing for at least three of the last four years preceding appointment.
Public Member Qualifications
- Cannot be appointed to any other state licensing board; or
- Cannot be engaged for compensation in the provision of health services or the provision of health research, instruction, or insurance.
