Temporary Permit
Single-State (Valid only in SD)
The holder of a temporary permit must use the title, registered nurse application (R.N. App.) or licensed practical nurse applicant (L.P.N. App.).
An individual holding an LPN Temporary Permit shall only practice under the supervision of a Registered Nurse on duty in the area where the holder of the permit is practicing.

Practice Authority
- This Certified Nurse Practitioner has met the 1,040 hours of practice requirement and may practice according to the scope listed in SDCL 36-9A-12 and 36-9A-13.1. This includes prescribing, procuring, furnishing and administering over-the-counter, legend and controlled substance drugs, schedules II-IV, according to federal and state registration requirements.
- Certified Nurse Midwives may practice according to the scope listed in 36-9A-13 and 36-9A-13.1, which includes prescribing drugs.
- A collaborative agreement is required for a licensee who has not met the required 1,040 hours of practice as a licensed . A collaborative agreement is not required and is not applicable for licensees that have met this requirement.
- CNMs may provide out-of-hospital (OOH) birth services pursuant to ARSD 20:62:03:10 upon submission of a signed agreement to follow the SD Board of Nursing's OOH birth practice guidelines.
