Medication Aide Training Program Information
Initial Approval Requirements
- A training program must be no less than 20-hours: 16-hours theory and 4-hours clinical/lab
- An approved RN instructor must use a Board approved curriculum to teach the 16-hour theory portion of the course
- Only approved RN or LPN instructors may teach the 4-hour clinical/lab portion of the course
- An approved RN instructor must evaluate student competence using the Board’s Clinical Skills Checklist
- At a minimum, an RN must re-validate competency of the Medication Aide annually.
Instructor Requirements
- Instructors of the theory portion of the course must be licensed RNs with a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience;
- Instructors of the lab/clinical portion of the course must be licensed RNs or LPNs with a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience.
- Instructors must be onsite and in the immediate area of the student to directly observe the student's performance
A registered medication aide (Unlicensed Medication Aide/UMA) is not allowed to teach, supervise, or shadow students.
Renewal of an Approved Program
- Approved programs must renew every 2 years by April 30 of even-numbered years
- A reminder notice to renew will be sent to programs listed on the Approved Program List
